The Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies (IAOS) – founded in 2013 – is the center of research and teaching on Asia and the Orient at the University of Zurich (UZH). It aims to position itself nationally and internationally as one of the leading institutions in the field. By bringing together the disciplines of Chinese Studies, Indian Studies, Islamic Studies, Japanese Studies, and Gender Studies within one institutional structure, the University of Zurich's strategic focus on Asian and Oriental studies has become more prominent within the University, the international academic landscape and amongst the general public in Switzerland. With numerous research projects and a variety of programs at BA-, MA- and PhD-level in the aforementioned disciplines, there exists no other institution of comparable focus and scope in Switzerland.
The PostDoc will be working for the Chair of Islamic Studies (Prof. Dr. Rebecca Sauer).
Your responsibilities
As PostDoc at the department you will:- develop an independent research project that will eventually lead to a second monograph ("Habilitation")
- offer courses at BA and MA levels (2-4 hours/semester) and assist students
- assist with the organisation of workshops and conferences, as well as fulfil departmental administrative tasks
- actively participate in research colloquiums and in the broader activities of the Department and the Institute (such as the "Zurich medievalist network")
Your profile
- PhD in Islamic Studies or adjacent fields (history, religious studies, anthropology)
- Excellent knowledge of Arabic required; knowledge of another language relevant to the field (Persian, Ottoman Turkish, Urdu) appreciated
- Teaching experience
- Administrative skills
- Interdisciplinary research agenda focusing on dis/continuities between the pre-modern and the modern world
- Motivation to further advance on the academic career path according to the standards of the German-speaking university system ("Habilitation")
