Department of Geography

Lecturer Teaching in the field of geography and digital transformation (Spatial Data Science)
100 %

We are looking for a lecturer (70 % teaching, 30 % research) for the new minor subject "Spatial Data Science" at the Department of Geography of the University of Zurich.

"One Earth - Many Worlds" is the motto under which the Department of Geography (GIUZ) researches and teaches on topics such as globalization, climate change and mobile information societies. Around 60 lecturers, organized in 19 research units, are involved in the education of around 850 students taking two degree courses: Geography and Earth System Sciences. With 200 employees, the institute is the largest of its kind in Switzerland. As an addition to our team, we are looking for a lecturer for the development and implementation of the new minor subject "Spatial Data Science".

Your responsibilities

As a Lecturer Teaching you will coordinate the development and implementation of the new minor in Spatial Data Science within the Geography degree program (70 %). You will be jointly responsible for offering and organizing teaching in the areas of geoscientific applications of spatial data, life cycles of data, data quality, ethical and social aspects in the context of digital geodata as well as for teaching programming languages and their application. The teaching load will include approximately 10 semester hours per week per semester. Some of these courses are offered by a team of lecturers and assistants, so that organizational and coordinating activities are also part of the job profile. As a Lecturer Teaching you are a member of the GIUZ and report to the Institute's Co-Director Teaching. Also, you will be part of the cross-departmental "Teaching Hub" of the faculty. You will also have the opportunity to conduct independent research (30 %).

Your profile

We expect a doctorate in Geography, Geoinformatics or Earth System Science and several years of experience in teaching at university level. In-depth teaching skills in the field of spatial data science and in the teaching of programming languages (e.g. Python, R) are required. We expect enthusiasm for teaching and its further development in new teaching formats. You should be able to teach basic courses (especially at Bachelor level) at university level in German and also have an excellent command of English. An established research program related to Spatial Data Science and/or digital transformation is required.

What we offer

We offer a varied, responsible teaching position in a high-caliber academic and socially relevant environment. The newly created Lecturer Teaching positions at the University of Zurich offer alternative, non-professorial, career opportunities. After passing the probationary period, you will be offered a permanent (full-time) position with a competitive salary as an "academic staff member with special responsibilities". A doctoral position will also be funded.

Place of work

University of Zurich Irchel, Winterthurerstrasse 190, 8057 Zürich, Switzerland
