Start of employment : The first position is open from September 1, 2024 or upon agreement, the second one from January 1, 2025.The Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies (IAOS) of the University of Zurich is the largest center of research and teaching on Asia in Switzerland with about 100 employees. The Department of Japanese Studies invites applications for a PhD candidate / research and teaching fellow. The successful candidate will be a member of the Chair of Japanology lead by Prof Raji Steineck.
Your responsibilities
The doctoral position allows the successful candidate to develop their own research project (PhD project). Work duties include independent teaching and coaching of students (on BA and MA level) as well as collaboration in projects and administration of the chair.
Your profile
- MA in Japanese Studies (or equivalent), excellent thesis on a subject concerning literary or intellectual history.
- Very good knowledge of Japanese, including classical Japanese and kanbun.
- Since teaching and administrative work is basically conducted in German, non-German speaking candidates are expected to acquire a working knowledge of German within the first two years of appointment.
