Within the National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) Evolving Language and its 46 different research groups from a large variety of disciplines across Switzerland, and the University of Zurich Technology Platform LiRI (Linguistic Research Infrastructure), we seek to hire a statistician.

The successful candidate will join our Team of Data Scientists and contribute to our mission of providing statistical expertise to the entire NCCR. The position is initially limited for a period of one year with the possibility of extension and a permanent contract. The successful candidate will join a data science task force at the NCCR's headquarters in Zurich, embedded in the University of Zurich's Technology Platform LiRI.

Your responsibilities

You will work proactively in a team of data scientists and software engineers, to provide statistical expertise in a consulting service setting to researchers of diverse backgrounds and design and teach internal trainings with research groups on statistical topics of common interest. Consultations often involve highly advanced issues, requiring the development of bespoke models and new methods together with researchers.

Your profile

  • A PhD degree in statistics, applied statistics, computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering or similar fields.
  • Profound knowledge in classical and Bayesian statistics, including practical familiarity with a probabilistic programming language (e.g. Stan)
  • Extensive experience in the statistical software environment R.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with emphasis on teamwork and on multidisciplinary perspectives.
  • Experience in developing efficient solutions in both small and big data settings.
Research experience in language science, evolutionary or behavioral biology, ecology, genetics, evolutionary anthropology, psychology or neuroscience is an advantage.
