Department of German and Scandinavian Studies

Postdoc: Eighteenth-Century Studies (48 months) 100 %

Start of employment 01.07.2025, temporary

In Zurich, we have been successfully and internationally engaged in researching the aesthetics of the early and middle Enlightenment for many years. Our primary focus is on ethical, social, and political practices, as aesthetics extends far beyond a philosophical science of sensual cognition. From its inception, aesthetics has been concerned with the possibilities of intervening in life and changing the world.

Your responsibilities

We are seeking to fill a postdoctoral position within the new SNSF project: “ARTS: The Formation of Practical Aesthetics in A. G. Baumgarten's German Corpus.” Complementary to theoretical aesthetics, Baumgarten establishes a practical aesthetics in the popular genres of his often-overlooked German-language writings. This practical aesthetics aims at the formation of aesthetic communities. Project languages are German or English.
Your role is to co-manage the project with me and implement the research program, which includes making the corpus accessible; the possibility of habilitation at the University of Zurich is given.

Your profile

A prerequisite is an excellent doctoral degree in German Studies or Philosophy.

Information on your application

Please submit your application, including a CV, a max. two-sided cover letter, a 20-page writing sample, and the names of two referees (no reference letters needed) via email in a single PDF document until December 15, 2024. A project proposal is not required at this stage.
