Start of employment as soon as possible or upon agreement

There is a PhD Student position opening in the research group of Dr. Simon Sieber (which is part of Prof. Dr. Karl Gademann's research group), located at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Zurich. Dr. Sieber's research group focuses on developing analytical methods for the fast and selective identification of natural products. The project consists of synthesizing chemoselective probes to enhance the discovery process of novel natural products. This interdisciplinary approach combines Organic Synthesis, Analytical Chemistry, and Metabolomics.

We offer an ambitious project in a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art equipment and infrastructure, ensuring its successful implementation. Furthermore, the successful applicant will have unique opportunities to develop a strong interdisciplinary portfolio, fostering personal and professional growth.

You will be welcomed into a collaborative team where your tasks will be to synthesize chemical probes possessing various scaffolds, extract natural products from multiple sources, perform and analyze results with the UHPLC-HRMS system, elucidate the structure of compounds using several techniques (NMR, HRMS/HRMS, CD etc.), and perform bioassay to evaluate the bioactivity of natural products.

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a high degree of initiative to work on an interdisciplinary project. The ideal candidate possesses a Master's degree in Chemistry with a strong background in Analytical and Organic Chemistry. Previous experience in natural product isolation will be considered a strong advantage. Fluency in English is required, as well as excellent communication and writing skills.
