Department of Chemistry

PhD Position in Solid-Phase Peptide Synthesis (Industry Collaboration) 80 %

Start of employment ideally as soon as possible, temporary

A PhD position is available in the group of Prof. Dr. Nina Hartrampf at the Department of Chemistry, University of Zurich (Switzerland), in collaboration with the company Novo Nordisk in Måløv, Denmark. The Hartrampf group uses flow chemistry for the chemical synthesis and modification of peptides and proteins. As part of the collaborative project, you will investigate methods to improve peptide synthesis using flow chemistry, high throughput instrumentation, and computational methods. The PhD will be carried out at the University of Zurich, with additional research visits to Novo Nordisk.

We offer an exciting PhD position in a stimulating and challenging environment at the interface of chemistry, automation, and computational analysis. You will be trained in state-of-the-art SPPS technology, organic chemistry, data analysis, and machine learning. With this joint research project, you will be part of an interdisciplinary and international research collaboration.

Your responsibilities

This project combines a variety of disciplines and tools in the broader field of chemical peptide synthesis and computational chemistry. You will design, synthesize and modify amino acids, and will use them in peptide synthesis using our state-of-the-art fully automated synthesis platform, and Novo Nordisk's high throughput facilities. You will be driving the characterization of chemically synthesized peptides using various analytical techniques (UHPLC, LCMS, CD, etc.). You will use various computational methods to analyze and predict synthesis results, in close collaboration with Novo Nordisk.

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated, curious and enthusiastic PhD student for a four-year research collaboration between the Hartrampf group (University of Zurich), and Novo Nordisk (Måløv, Denmark). The candidate should hold a Master's degree in chemistry or chemical engineering, and should have expertise in programming (ideally Python). Expertise in peptide chemistry (SPPS), synthetic organic chemistry and machine learning is a plus, but not required. You are adept at working in an open, interdisciplinary, and collaborative environment that you will contribute to with curiosity, scientific agility, self-motivation, and strong communication skills.

Information on your application

Please submit your application before November 15, 2024 as a single pdf (incomplete applications will not be considered).

Your application should contain:
  • letter of motivation
  • curriculum vitae
  • short summary of past research accomplishments
  • transcripts of your academic records from your University, and a copy of your degree
  • contact details of two referees (e.g. your M.Sc. thesis supervisor)
