Department of Neonatology

PhD position in Epidemiology in the SwissNeoNet research group 80 %

Start of employment September 1, 2025, temporary

The Swiss Neonatal Network & Follow-up Group (SwissNeoNet) is a national network coordinating research and quality assessment for all neonatal intensive and intermediate care units in Switzerland. For this it operates a sophisticated online medical registry collecting data on primary hospitalization and neurodevelopmental follow-up for various cohorts of newborns with a high risk of adverse outcome or development. Newborn Research Zurich (NRZ) conducts ongoing clinical research and hosts SwissNeoNet in its offices in Schlieren, just next to the city of Zurich. Some of your PhD study time will be at the Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute (EBPI) which is located just below the UZH Main Campus / University Hospital in Zurich.

Your responsibilities

SwissNeoNet is an associated partner of the European Horizon project “IMPROVing lifElong health and development for children and adults born very PRETERM”. The project addresses the high and persistent burden of poor health and impairment associated with very preterm birth by developing a research framework for affordable, patient oriented research with results that are effective in a real world setting. Your task in this will be to participate in building comparative effectiveness use cases, e.g. for lung maturation via antenatal steroids, by analyzing data from randomized controlled trials combined with those from large European cohort studies and registries. You will assist in integrating SwissNeoNet into the existing European RECAP Preterm Platform and help optimise innovations in methods for causal inference, data capture and infrastructure development with the needs and values of affected individuals and families. To coordinate efforts, the IMPROVE PRETERM project team meets annually in Paris.

You will become part of highly innovative research at the intersection of Clinical Research and Digital Health. As a member of our interdisciplinary team you will receive the opportunity to pursue your research independently, but with support of specialists in Epidemiology, Medicine, IT, and Biostatistics. Our offices are conveniently reachable via public transport (Tram station at the campus).

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated person with a Master's degree (e.g. in Epidemiology, Statistics, Biology, Biomedicine, Medicine) and with good knowledge of Biostatistics and statistical programming (e.g., R), a good command of English and German (French is an asset), and the willingness to actively collaborate within the NRZ, SwissNeoNet and the Improve Preterm teams.

Information on your application

The employment will start in September 2025 or by agreement. Please submit your application by
01.05.2025 via the link to the online application tool only. Make sure to select the PhD Program in
Epidemiology & Biostatistics as primary program interest.
