Institute of Biomedical Ethics and History of Medicine and the Center for Medical Humanities

Assistant History of Medicine 60 %

Start of employment 1 September 2025

The History of Medicine Group within the Institute of Biomedical Ethics and History of Medicine and the Center for Medical Humanities at the University of Zurich, led by Professor Flurin Condrau, seeks to appoint a research assistant (60%, competitive salary based on experience). The appointment is for three years with potential for extension by another three years. Applicants must hold an MA degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. history, anthropology, sociology) and plan to develop a PhD research project (as a doctoral student of the department of history or other relevant department). The group's main research area is the contemporary history of human and veterinary medicine (19th-21st centuries) with an emphasis on the history of hospitals, clinical care, medical technology, infectious diseases, and chronic health challenges. Switzerland is an obvious focus, but we also welcome scholars interested in a relevant geographical area and the history of public and global health.
The University of Zurich is the largest university in Switzerland. As a member of the "League of European Research Universities" (LERU) and the "Universitas 21" (U21) network, the University of Zurich belongs to Europe's most prestigious research institutions. It is committed to promoting diversity, fostering dialogue, and advancing interdisciplinary work.

Your responsibilities

The appointee will work closely with members of the group and contribute to the intellectual life of a small but lively unit. They will have ample time to pursue their research to acquire a PhD (Dr. phil). At least 50 % of your working time will be reserved for your own research. Other tasks include teaching (mainly for medical education), supervision of student work and other fields of activity as part of the history of medicine group.

Your profile

Applicants should hold an MA. You should bring along a strong academic record with exposure to the history and/or sociology of health. We particularly welcome applications from women and minority scholars. Usable German language skills are essential at the start of the job even if it is not the first language. It is expected that the successful candidate will be in residence for the duration of the appointment.
